Timebank members and friends celebrated Diwali, the festival of light, on Saturday 14 November. Shrobona Bhattacharya and her family organised the event to share knowledge about this Indian cultural event with local people. We were introduced to the meaning of the festival as a triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. Then we were treated to some traditional songs, prayers and dances. The women got a chance to try on saris and finally we all shared a meal of lentil dal and rice, followed by ice-cream.
Clare said: "The children were really taken by the dancing and they also liked the dal. Shrobona is going to arrange a cooking class so that I can learn the recipe." Darcy added: "We really enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the celebration, wear saris, eat delicious food, socialise and be entertained. It was a privilege for Poppy and Flo to participate by performing the dance."
